How Good Do You Want To Be?

How good do you want to be? This is a question the great Nick Saban often ask his football players. I came across Nick’s book while i was reading an article in the wall street journal. After reading the author expound upon Nick’s ideology, immediately i went and purchased a copy. Every once in a while i come across a book that I put aside for my children that i think should be required reading. Some books change your paradigm and inspire you to action. This is one of those books. I like Nick’s principles because it’s very much of the same principles that I live by myself.

In order to get what you want out of life you must first know what you want to get. Most people aim at nothing in life and they hit it dead on. My philosophy on life is this, you are playing this game called life whether you agree to or not, so you might as well learn how to win. The world has no room for weak-minded sympathetic individuals. Every time someone complains to me I say “Either your going to do it or you’re not”. Complaining gets you nowhere. You have to be grounded in principles and stick to those principles day in and day out. Taking days off will push you further away from your goals. You have to be relentless in the pursuit of excellence. Thoughts turn into things, so pay close attention to your thoughts, and guard your mind from as many destructive things as possible.

You can’t commit to excellence until your mind is ready to take you there. Mental focus is crucial to your well-being. If you can’t focus on one single thing for a given amount of time then your future looks bleak. Know what you want and what you intend to do to get it.

Invest your time, don’t spend it. Make sure your time is invested and not just being spent. Your time is one of your greatest assets, some would argue that it is your greatest asset.

You don’t always get what you want, but you get what you deserve. Universal forces will always give to you what you deserve. You may want more and believe that you should have more, and this may in fact be true; but you will always get what you deserve. Life won’t cheat you so don’t waste your time trying to cheat life.

Promise a starting time, but not a quitting time. Always keep your word by always starting on the time that you set. Be ready to go the distance every time, no excuses. Remember that you want to do your job right no matter how long it takes. Chasing perfection at every corner. Doing the best even when the people around you want to take a day off is what will make the difference between them and you.

Patience is a Necessity for Success. Be patient with yourself. Know that the vision takes time to develop. Persistence is the key. Have clear defined goals and make sure every step you take is in the direction of your goals. Some people and things will have to be replaced but never compromise on your goals until you can know for sure that you need to take another course of action. Most of the time people quit to early and if they had just kept going a little longer they would have succeeded at their goals.

Enjoy your work. Don’t let your work kill your life. Be relentless but also do what you love. Sacrificing your happiness for money never works out in the long run. What good is money if you have to sacrifice your mental health. Work hard. Work smart. Most of all love and enjoy what you do, so that you can be the best at what you do. Follow your heart not anyone else’s.

Know what you want and know what you are willing to do to get it. Train your mind to train your body. Be willing to do what others aren’t. No one knows what it will take better than you do. Be honest with yourself and don’t feed yourself feel good stories. Write your goals down and read them every day. Tune out all the outside haters and stay the course. In the long run you always get what you deserve, so stay focused and committed and follow your heart not the hearts of others.
